Smarter Dev

More than 13,000 developers have joined since I started this. It began as Beginner.py, became Beginner.Codes, and is now Smarter Dev. The idea was simple. New programmers wanted real help from real developers instead of being told to read the manual. It grew up with the people in it. A lot of them showed up writing their first loops and are shipping production code now.

The challenges

For about three and a half years I posted a coding challenge every weekday. More than 800 of them. People came to solve them, compare answers, and argue about the edge cases nobody else noticed. I wrote the bots that ran the whole thing. I retired the daily format a while back, but that rhythm is what gave this place its character, and it is coming back in a new shape as RunHacks.

What it’s actually like

This isn’t a giant, noisy server, and I’m not trying to make it one. It’s a smaller room where you can ask a real question and get a real answer from someone who has already shipped the thing you’re stuck on. Post your code and get honest feedback. Show what you’re building. Talk through the parts of Python, architecture, and AI that are hard to get right.

Beginners are treated like they belong, because that is how the whole thing started. The only thing I ask is that you came here to get better at building software.
